The Birding Itinerary

At the junction of the A-132 with the N-240 take the turning along a minor road leading to the village of Arrés. Stop and park sensibly when the landscape opens, with fields on your right and scrubby hillsides on the left. This is an ideal area to search for the Ortolan Bunting from May onwards. There are many other birds that can be seen along the length of this road in the patches of woodland, scrub and open fields, including Great Spotted Woodpecker, Bee-eater, Western Bonelli’s Warbler, Subalpine Warbler,  Woodchat Shrike, Cirl Bunting, Corn Bunting etc.

Return to the N-240 and follow in the direction of Jaca for approximately 10 kilometres until you reach the turning on the right along the A-1603 for Santa Cruz de la Serós and San Juan de la Peña. Sant Cruz de la Serós is an attractive village in a splendid setting.

From here the road ascends to San Juan de la Peña, and it is worth stopping once or twice along the ascent, firstly to enjoy the numerous birds of prey – Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Eagle, Red Kite, Peregrine, Egyptian Vulture and Golden Eagle are all possible - and secondly to look for passerines such as Firecrest, Rock Bunting, Cirl Bunting and Crested Tit.
